Self Massage For Your Body, Mind & Spirit

"I move through this day uninhibited knowing that the presence of God within takes care of all my needs. My life represents the activity of God."

Na'Imah D. Powell, M.D.

It is vital that we honor our sacred body temple with daily love, light and blessings. Self-massage is a wonderful way to love yourself by being present or in touch with your innermost thoughts and feelings. Think of it as a special time of prayer and meditation for your body temple. It gives you the time to be still, and to feel, hear and know that Spirit is all around and through you. Spirit is you. Now is the time to truly connect and be in the present moment.

With the day-to-day tasks that we find ourselves doing as a giver to and for others, it is important that we take the time to rejuvenate, replenish and revive our body temples in a nurturing way. Self massage is a wonderful way of saying to yourself “I Love and cherish my body every day in every way!"

When you experience the joy and elation of Spirit in you and as you, endorphins are released throughout our system. These endorphins are our body temple's natural painkillers. All your thoughts and feelings are lifted in love and light! You are being fully present and honoring your authentic divine well-being.

The following movements are a series of mini treatments you can do for your self to show love, appreciation and gratitude to your sacred body temple. Please note that the Breathing and Stretching meditations are found in the book Energy Medicine by Donna Eden with David Feinstein. The massage meditations are some simple techniques I have found in my years of bodywork that help relieve stress and bring relaxation to the body.

Touch Treatments for the Body Temple:
 (Breathing Stretching and Massaging Meditations)

Neck and Shoulder Tension Release: Standing, with your arms stiffened and hanging down the sides of your body, make fists, and lift your shoulders high, rolling your head back and to the sides. Repeat this half circle motion for 15 to 20 seconds a couple of times each day. You are giving your neck and shoulder a natural massage that softens the knots, breaks up calcium deposits, and frees energy to move through the area.

Tapping Your Energy Points: Place your fingers on your collarbone. Now slide them inward toward the center and find the bumps where they stop. Drop about an inch beneath these corners and slightly outward. Most people have a slight indent here that their fingers will drop into. With the fingers of both your hands turned toward your body, tap and/or massage the points firmly while breathing deeply in through your nose and out through your mouth. Continue for about 20 seconds. If your situation does not allow you to use both hands at the same time, use your thumb and fingers to tap or massage at once. This will help energize you if you are feeling drowsy and focus you if you are having difficulty concentrating.

The Cross-Crawl: While standing, lift your right arm and left leg simultaneously. As you let them down, raise your left arm and right leg. Repeat, this time exaggerating the lift of your leg and the swing of your arm across the midline to the opposite side of your body. Continue in this exaggerated march for at least a minute, breathing deeply in through your nose and out through your mouth. This will help you to feel more balanced, think more clearly and improve your coordination.

The Wayne Cook Posture:

1)     Place your right foot over your left knee. Wrap your left hand around your right ankle and your right hand around the ball of your right foot.

2)     Breathe in slowly through your nose, letting the breath lift your body as you breathe in. As you exhale, breathe out your mouth slowly, letting your body relax. Repeat this slow breathing and stretching 4 or 5 times.

3)     Switch to the other foot. Place your left foot over your right knee. Wrap your right hand around your left ankle and your left hand around the ball of your left foot. Use the same breathing.

4)     Uncross your legs and place your fingertips together forming a pyramid. Bring your thumbs to rest on your "third eye," just above the bridge of your nose. Breathe slowly in through your nose. Then breathe out through your mouth, allowing your thumbs to separate slowly across your forehead pulling the skin. Then bring your thumbs back to the "third eye" position. Slowly bring your hands down in front of you, pulling them together into a prayerful position while breathing deeply. Surrender into your own breathing. This posture can help you untangle inner chaos, see with better perspective, focus your mind more effectively, think more clearly and learn more proficiently.

(This procedure is named to honor Wayne Cook, a pioneering researcher of bioenergetics force field.)

Total Body Self-Massage:
(You may use your favorite lotion or oil for the treatments)

Feet: Your feet are the anchors of your body temple. You want to relax rejuvenate and energize them in a nurturing way. So begin by taking your foot in hand and massaging the bottom in a circular motion starting with the ball, moving to the arch and finally to your heel. You may use one or both hands.  After massaging the bottom begin working with the top of your foot. Gently stroke in between each toe moving towards the top of the toes. Firmly squeeze your foot in a gentle pulsing motion from heel to toe 2 to 3 times. Change feet and repeat the treatment.

Hands: Hands are important and active parts of your body temple. Whether you are driving, reaching for or carrying items your hands can become stressed and fatigued. By massaging the hands your entire body will become energized. The same massage treatment used for the feet can be applied to your hands.
See above explanation.

Total Body Massage/Pulsation: Take both of your hands and gently massage your body in a circular motion starting by moving up the legs to the back, stomach, chest, arms, hands, shoulders, neck, head and face.

Neck/Head Relaxation: Place your hands in a cupping position so your thumbs rest at the base of your skull. Slide your thumbs down about an inch to the soft indentation. Firmly press these points for 3 seconds and then release for 5 seconds. Repeat 2 to 3 times or as needed. This treatment is great for stiff necks, tension and headaches. It gives you a wonderful euphoric feeling.

Tennis Ball Acupressure: For those nagging hard to reach back and shoulder pains an ordinary garden-variety tennis ball does wonders. Simply lie down on the floor and place the tennis ball in the area that has been causing the discomfort. Next apply your own body weight pressure to the tennis ball directly into the affected area. Press for 3 seconds and release for 5 seconds. Repeat 2 to 3 times or as needed.

This is also a great treatment for your feet. In a standing position, place the feet in a parallel position. Step one foot forward and place the tennis ball under the forward foot. Shift your body weight to the forward foot and press down. Start with the ball moving to the arch the heel and the sides of your foot. Change feet and repeat the treatment. This treatment brings energy and mental clarity to your entire body temple.
